What Is This?

What Is a Broken Link Checker?

A broken link checker scans a webpage for links that may lead to unavailable or invalid destinations and helps identify URLs that need attention. Our tool checks every internal link (to your own site) and external link (to other websites) on the page you enter, following each one to see its real HTTP status code. That's how it tells the difference between a healthy link, a 404 error or other dead link, and a link that still works but sends visitors through a redirected URL first.

How It Works

How to Check for Broken Links

01

Enter your website URL.

02

Start the scan.

03

Review the links we discovered on the page.

04

Identify links returning errors or unexpected responses.

05

Fix, replace, or remove the problematic links.

06

Run the check again to confirm.

What It Checks

What Our Broken Link Checker Checks

Dead links hurt both user experience and site maintenance — here's exactly what we check for.

Internal Links

Every link pointing to another page on your own site.

External Links

Every link pointing out to another website.

HTTP Status Codes

The real, live response code each link actually returns — not just whether it's present in the page.

404 Responses

Links pointing to pages that no longer exist.

3xx Redirects

Links that still work but send visitors through a redirect first, shown separately with their destination.

Failed Requests

Links that time out, fail to connect, or return a server error (5xx).

Why It Matters

Why Broken Links Matter for SEO

User Experience

Broken links create dead ends for visitors, right when they're trying to get somewhere specific.

Website Maintenance

They make it harder to maintain a clean website, and tend to accumulate quietly over time.

Crawling

Large websites with many problematic links can create unnecessary crawl and maintenance issues.

Lost Conversions

A broken link to an important page, product, or form can directly interrupt a user's journey.

Troubleshooting

How to Fix Broken Links

The right fix depends on why the link is broken.

URL Moved Permanently

Update the link to the new URL, or put an appropriate redirect in place.

Page Intentionally Removed

Remove the link, or replace it with a relevant alternative page.

External Page Unavailable

Find a reliable alternative source, or remove the reference entirely.

Typo in the URL

Correct the URL — a surprisingly common cause of an otherwise-avoidable broken link.

Redirect Chain

Update the link to point directly at the final destination where appropriate — check it with our Redirect Chain Checker.

Which Is Which?

Broken Link vs. Redirect

Related, but not the same thing.

Broken Link

The destination cannot be successfully reached — a 404, a server error, or a failed request.

Redirect

The URL still works — it just sends the visitor or crawler somewhere else first.

Want to see exactly where a redirect leads, and how many hops it takes? Use our Redirect Chain Checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. There's no signup, no email required, and no limit on how many pages you can check.

It checks the links found on the single page you submit. For a full-site crawl covering every page, our team can run a complete link audit as part of a website review.

Up to 40 links per page in a single run. If a page has more, we check the first 40 and let you know the page had more links than that.

Any link that returns a 404 (not found), a 5xx server error, or fails to load at all. Redirected links (3xx responses) are shown separately since they still work, just not directly.

Redirects still load the destination page but add extra load time and can lose some SEO value compared to linking directly. Worth fixing where possible, but not urgent like a broken link.

No. We fetch the page, check its links, and don't save the URL or results anywhere.
